This meeting was attended by approximately 40 people, including many guests who had come to hear our guest speaker Judge French.  After the inductions of two new members, Fiona Crowe and Lois Joll, Judge French provided a fascinating account of what it is like to balance being the heroine and the wicked witch!  She explained that she is no 'princess in an ivory tower' as the justice system brings her face to face with the 'worst side of human nature'.  Judge French outlined three problems that contribute to the situation:  mental health problems not addressed by our poorly funded mental health system; drug abuse, especially amphetamines that make people aggressive and domestic violence caused by welfare issues.  She called on the whole community to see these problems as a community responsibility and acknowledged how service groups can play a significant role.  She commended the club on the Ngarinyin friendship project and wished us every success in our endeavours to establish a safe house for teenage girls.

 9th February 2006—Dinner meeting, 6.15pm

The dinner meeting of 9 February commenced with the induction of Jacqueline Hope.  Jacqueline has lived in Australia since 1992 and formerly is from the UK. She has worked in community birth centres and been involved in cultural exchange, particularly concerning Muslim women.  She sees Zonta as the opportunity to empower young women and is impressed with Zonta by the record of achievements in fundraising work.  She was enthusiastic to be a member of our club!

Annette Shrivers was the guest speaker of the meeting (Zonta House Refuge Manager).  She delivered an interesting update on the current Zonta house refuge project with the Department of Community Development.  She indicated that there are 4,000 homeless people in Australia of which 30% are under the age of 16 years.

The Department of Community Development approached the Zonta House Refuge regarding developing a programme and housing for 3-5 girls between the ages of 13-16, to stay for 6 months.  The program for the girls will be developed to teach them short term and long term life skill programs- ie domestic life skills, education, going to work/school, conflict management, anger management and financial management.  The girls will be agreeing to terms of their development prior to their entry, with the scheme based on a rewards incentive scheme with rewards such as shopping vouchers, etc.

DCD are hoping to work in partnership with many organisations to develop and deliver the various outcomes of the program, working with university social workers, etc.  This is a pilot program and at the meeting the Zonta Perth Branch offered to support the project where possible and would like to keep in touch with the updates/ news from the programme.

This event was a great success.  Over 30 people helped out in one way or another and the venue at St Pius X Catholic Church Parish Hall, 23 Paterson St, Manning was excellent.  One thousand kits were assembled and have been sent to Vietnam.  This AusAID funded project ensures that all kits are sent to organisations in the partner countries so they may be used by trained birthing assistants.  Every kit makes a difference and with one person dying every minute as a result of giving birth in an unclean environment - these kits have the potential to save 1,000 lives.  Many thanks to Deb Hegarty and Marilyn Piper for co-ordinating the morning.

14th July - Dinner meeting, The University Club, UWA

Guest speakers were our own club members Freda Jacob and Penny Flett.  Members soon realised just how remarkable these two women are.  Freda amazed us with her stories of farming with horses, hitchhiking round Europe, driving across the USA and in between all this establishing the occupational therapy profession in Western Australia.  (See August Inzert for her story)

Penny had an exotic colonial childhood living in Borneo and attended boarding school in the UK before going to live in Adelaide to complete her secondary education and then enter University to train as a doctor. During this time she met her husband and upon qualifying, they joined the RAAF.  In 1974 she became the first woman in peacetime to hold a male rank and the first woman doctor to serve in the RAAF. (She also caused a few problems for the service especially with uniforms!)  She has always taken an interest in Aged Care and is currently the CEO of the Brightwater Care Group.  Penny was named Telstra Australian Business Woman of the Year in 1998 and was awarded the Centenary Medal in 2003 for service to the aged and disabled community.  We're glad there is someone as enlightened as Penny creating a pleasant world for us to grow into as we get older.

16th April - AstroFest at Trinity College, East Perth, 3pm to 10pm.

AstroFest 2005 was a great family day out, even if again, the Gods were not kind and it was overcast during the day and rained at night!  However the Rocket Society managed to get off some very exciting launches during the afternoon and there were some super talks by some excellent speakers.  The Zonta Club of Perth stand raised awareness of the Amelia Earhart Fellowships and featured a display of famous women astronomers, which just about every visitor to the AstroFest read and passed comment on!  Small business cards were provided to visitors with the web address of Zonta International, so that more information could be downloaded about the Amelia Earhart Fellowships.

The Club finished the Zonta year with some flair with a Special AGM at The University Club at the University of WA.

The Zonta Club of Perth's YWIPA Award nominee, Claudia Rosario, inspired us with a well prepared presentation that captured her commitment to improving the lives of people around the world.  (A future Zontian in the making?)  Club members were delighted to have the opportunity to meet Claudia and her mother Caroline.

The election of office bearers went very smoothly, reflecting the tremendous work undertaken behind the scenes by the Nominating Committee chaired by 'Tricia Summerfield.  Office bearers for 2005-6 are:

17th March - Cheese and Wine Introduction to Zonta evening.

The Membership & Support committee held another successful wine & cheese evening on Thursday 17th March at Linley Buchanan's office at 35 Brewer Street, East Perth.  Five prospective members attended the evening along with six club members.

Lori Grech (Chair, Membership and Support) hosted the evening and introduced Karen Groves (Club President) who provided an engaging overview of Zonta using the displays of club activities to support her presentation.  Tricia Summerfield (Chair, Finance and Fundraising) and Carole Theobald (Chair, PR) outlined the activities undertaken through their respective committees and together with Lennie McCall, Linley Buchanan and Marlene O'Meara were able to provide the guests with an understanding of how the club worked to achieve the aims of Zonta.   It was a warm (both in heat and friendliness), lively evening with delicious nibbles and great wine.

All guests were provided with a leaflet of club activities that includes the club's website and email details and will be invited to attend the next club meeting.

Many thanks to Linley for allowing us to use her beautiful heritage office for the evening.

Club Meeting 10th March - The University Club, UWA

Our club made a little bit of history on this night as it was among the first organisations to use the newly-built (and not quite finished) premises of The University Club.  The dinner was held in what will become The University Club members' restaurant and Zonta members were proudly shown around the building including to a few of the smaller well-equipped function rooms that may be suitable venues for future club meetings.

Karen Groves welcomed guests to the meeting, especially Patricia Thomson President of the Australian Federation of University Women, Barbara Hale, Secretary of the Australian Federation of University Women and Fiona Crowe, Principal of St Catherine’s College.

Marilyn Piper provided a background to the TAFE Awards, Guiding WA Award and Education Award.  The TAFE Awards and Guiding WA Awards had been presented last year at ceremonies held at Perth Central TAFE and Guiding WA.  However, this evening was an opportunity for members to meet the award recipients and also to present the Education Award for 2005.

Marilyn introduced the following award recipients:

  • Julia Carter – TAFE (Community Services) 2004 Award

  • Amelia Tomic – TAFE (Mental Health Non Clinical) 2004 Award (not present)

  • Tracey Jenkin – Guiding WA Leadership Award 2004 Award,

  • Emily Carroll – Education Award 2005 Award

The award recipients each gave a short presentation outlining their work and expressing thanks to the Zonta Club of Perth for the awards.

Julia Carter completed her Certificate IV in advocacy and has now embarked on a diploma in community work.  She undertakes voluntary work in Midland and has recently obtained a position with a Community Health Project to support private rental accommodation for Aboriginal people in the Midland area.

Lennie McCall oversees the Guiding Award that has been presented for over twenty years.  Lennie welcomed Tracey Jenkin and her husband Colin to the meeting.  Tracey was a guide as a child and became a guide leader four years ago.  She believes that if girls have positive role models these allow girls to be the best they can be.  Through guiding they are encouraged to set themselves challenges and learn the life skills to meet them.  With this training they will be able to set and meet challenges throughout their lives.  Tracey is also the Disability Co-ordinator for Guiding WA which is something that Tracey may know a lot about considering that during the day she works for the Disability Services Commission.

When introducing the Education Award for 2005, Marilyn Piper thanked the Education Award Subcommittee members, Roslyn Budd, Deb Hegarty and Kaye Martin, for their efforts in selecting a recipient - not an easy task.

Emily Carroll is studying at Notre Dame University towards a Bachelor of Science in behavioural science and social justice.  Emily has a passion for social justice and recently was part of a team that undertook a community service project to teach English in rural village in East Timor.  She spoke passionately about how children sat four to a desk sharing a pen and piece of paper.  In the last 25 years one third of the population has died as a result of conflict.  She has helped to establish as small non government organisation that asks local schools to fundraise so that children in Timor may go to school.

Club meeting - 10th February at Emerald Hotel

Over 30 members and guests were present at the first meeting after the summer break.  Everyone was warmly welcomed to the Emerald Hotel and provided with a drink by the hotel's owners, Marlene and Laurie O'Meara.  The beautiful two course meal was served to the tables and it was a very happy meeting as members took the opportunity to catch up on news.

The guest speaker, Trevor Cochrane, is one of WA's two well-known Garden Gurus.  Trevor was introduced by Linley Buchanan who has worked with him for many years.  Trevor enchanted us with a Powerpoint presentation about water-wise gardening - a very timely topic.  He had brought with him some examples of water-wise plants that he passed round the room.  The 'Little Gem Magnolia' caused quite a stir with its beauty and hardiness.  He kindly provided everyone with a calico bag full of gardening delights including reticulation capture cups, leaflets and samples of fertilisers.  See his the garden guru website for more information. Margaret Medcalf, a keen gardener herself, provide the vote of thanks.

At the business meeting, Karen Groves tabled the Club Priorities for 2005-6.  The Service Status of Women Committed displayed poster boards of the venue for the forthcoming Birthing Kit Workshop on 2nd April and everyone was encouraged to bring friends to help in the worthwhile event.  It was stressed that volunteers do not have to attend the entire morning as there are plenty of jobs to allocate during the event - Sharee Simms is keeping a list of volunteers, so give her a call to register your interest.

Don't forget to keep the 9th April free for the Area Workshop, which sounds like a very interesting day.
